From time to time you will find your thoughts straying far away from God and prayer. This can be disconcerting and discouraging.
When my thoughts wandered I used to say, “Oh, I’m sorry Lord, I wish I didn’t wander like this. Please help me not to…” and then off I would go into another daydream.
The causes of daydreams are many, tiredness being the most common. I know no way of avoiding them, but it is important to react rightly when you realize what you are doing. What is it, do you think, that brings you back to the point? Or better still, Who is it? When I discover myself daydreaming, my response now is, “Thank you, Lord. Thank you for rescuing me again. I would waste a lot more time daydreaming if it weren’t for You.” I don’t grovel. I don’t waste time in bitter self-recrimination or in discouragement. I rejoice in the infinite patience of God who never gives up and Who calls me constantly back to Himself. (From John White, The Fight, pp 34,35)
